A real leader is a person who empowers others. This is what my perception is. I might be wrong. But I can bolster my logic by facts.

First I’ll cite the example of Mt Lee Kuan Yew, who is regarded as the founding father of Singapore. I’ve read few books about him but I found one of those really interesting. I could not exactly recall the title but I guess it was ‘Lee’s Lieutenants’. It was quite interesting because Mr. Lee himself stated the secret of his success. He gave the credit to six or seven guys. The whole point of being the leader is to empower people. Picking right people for the right job is the key to be a successful leader. A leader is not a superman that can do everything. So he/she has to select his/her lieutenants carefully. But more important is trust. If there is no trust then there will be interference and it will eventually lead to dissatisfaction. Micro-management is not the answer but might be an occasional tool. Any sane person won’t like others to chase him over and over again. So choose smart guys and let them do the job. This is the best way.

Can we force a person to be motivated? No. Person can get a high for a while but eventually he will come down. So it is the matter of self-motivation. Different people have different motivation. But for most the biggest motivation is money. So leader should very carefully judge the level of motivation of everyone in his team. A new joiner in the team might be interested in challenging work, an experienced guy might want a bit of time for his family and somebody else might be happy to work overtime provided he is compensated for it. So a leader should be a master communicator or negotiator. Life is about give and take. So in a project situation (my personal experience) a small gesture of appreciation can go a long way. I’ve worked in teams where leader just doesn’t give a damn about subordinates. So the flow is unidirectional. At the end the leader de-motivates the team that is supposed to do the job!!! Well at the end of the day job might be done but there won’t be any respect. We have seen in past many leaders got the job done but lost the game. So are they great leaders? Nope. Earning respect is supreme. So if a leader can negotiate skilfully and motivate people he can earn respect. And at the end it is beneficial to Organizations and people.

A leader should have a vision. At junior level it might be to finish a project by a certain date. And at higher level it might be to improve the GDP of a country by X % points. Without a clear goal there can’t be a real cohesion. Well again it is the leader’s responsibility to clearly state the goal and get people motivated towards it. Then leader should choose smart lieutenants. If there is a shared vision then there will be synergy. Alexander is one of the greatest leader history has ever produced. At such a young age he motivated and led an army to capture most of the know-world at that time. There has been a lot of debate on his leadership. I personally feel he is a monumental failure. What did he achieve? He avenged on the Persians. That’s fine. Alexander was a man who wanted to be God. He in fact declared himself God. Human is mortal and the sooner we realize this the better. He was a megalomaniac. A dream or ambition that is not for the good of humanity is not a worthy dream. Finally Alexander’s army revolted and forced him to return. He was a power hungry ruler who chased MORE and MORE. So in nutshell a leader has to have a credible vision. Gandhi had a vision. He dreamed to establish a just society. As English were colonialists, they were driven out. Gandhi inspired people to fight for their right but in a non-violent way. That’s a true leadership for humanity.

One more bomb blast and 30 more innocent lives are lost. But who cares? CC TVs are not working since last three years. This is a good excuse. But well in India there is nothing called ‘accountability’. I can’t blame the police. Because the officers in police force are part of a broad society. When the society does not value ‘accountability’ how can we expect from a sub-group? So the whole society is to be blamed. A country is what its society is. People will die. But life goes on. That is India. Indians call it resilience and I call it indifference.

Indians say they are spiritually rich. But where is that spirituality? By praying you can never attain what Gita has preached. You got to practise the same. What is the point of spending two hours in front of God, yet pocketing bribe in office. Even though I’m an Indian, I can attest to the fact that many people are double standard.

Well, let me come back to bomb blast. When I was a kid, I’d seen a movie where the militant leader was mocking at Indian State. And at long last the movie came true. Such a shame that militants are killing innocent citizens everywhere. And before/after every blast they are sending e-mails mocking at everybody. The most shameful thing is that our Prime Minister, other senior ministers don’t feel guilty. Still these people in power don’t learn a lesson. It is a hopeless situation.

How can we solve this problem? Can we leave India to bleed to its death? I’m not an escapist. Otherwise I would have changed the passport long time back. I think the answer can be found in Singapore. We need a factor that can unify India. We don’t have an unifying factor. We don’t have common language, history, heritage etc. So what can be a factor that can attract everybody? Looking at the world, I think the answer is wealth. If we rapidly industrialise India, people will chase their material dream. Then only I think people will be united. As social disturbances will be an impediment for business and prosperity, people will come out and demand peace. Even with all kind of social trouble we should keep moving towards rapid liberalization and industrialisation. If not immediately, we will reach our goal after few decades. I stated Singapore as in example because that place shows how people can unite for a common goal i.e. wealth.

I hope the land of spiritualism and philosophy can gain back its right position in the world soon. Wealth is not an answer but it can be a means.

The other day I read in newspaper that due to the protest called by a political party India came to stand still. A person died because his ambulance was not allowed by the mob to move on. This is a deep concern for me. Do we really have democracy? Where is the justice system? This man might be the sole bread owner of a large family. Who is going to take care of that family? There might be small kids. Who is going to take care of those kids?

Justice delayed is justice denied. Who is responsible for this man’s death? Is it the mobs on the road? No. These mobs are bought over by few hundred rupees, a bottle of liquor and probably a prostitute. Is Indian police responsible for it? No. They are overwhelmed. If we trace the root then the real culprit would be the head of the political party. Let’s say he is Mr. X. X is playing his game. If X is playing his game, then X should be responsible for the ramifications as well. So if we register a case against Mr. X, how long will it take to get justice? Probably justice won’t see the light of the day. So where do we go next? If we trace the modern day justice system, it is the next step in the evolution from the ‘tribal’ justice system. Tribal justice is all about ‘eye for an eye’. But tribal justice is barbaric and not just in the true sense as powerful could always win the game. But any system of justice is better than nothing at all. So in the prevailing situation when there is no justice for common man in India what should citizens do? I don’t think the politician should go free. What if the deceased man’s son or his family contacts a hired gun to kill the politician or the child of the politician? Certainly it will be against the law of the land. But where is the law in the first place. Is not it against the law of the land to obstruct an ambulance?

If I were a judge then my profession will force me to sentence the family of the deceased man. But my heart will always be with them. If the justice system is unable to provide justice to the common men then people will take matters into their hands. It is quite simple. Law should either be applicable to all or not be applicable to anybody.

I’m not asking anybody to kill the politician X. But I just want the law of the land to be supreme. I want a just society. I want a society where strong and powerful should be accountable for their misadventures. Otherwise it is not a civilised society but a tribal one. Thus Indian society is a tribal society.

As an Indian citizen, as a Hindu and as an Indian by race, I’ve all the rights to criticise India, Hinduism and Indians.
